As part of the its meeting in San Antonio, on April 2, 2011, RAMSCA members and guests visited the Center for the Intrepid (CFI), a true gift of the American public and now part of Brooke Army Medical Center's (BAMC) Dept of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation.

The structure was originally financed entirely by private donations, with over 600,000 people contributing to the $50 million construction cost.

The center provides treatment for traumatic amputee patients and burn patients requiring advanced rehabilitation, to help them regain their ability to live and work with their injuries. In fact, a percentage of these Wounded Warriors return to active duty. All four AMSC specialties support the mission of the CFI.  It is a truly amazing facility.

Interesting in supporting the mission of the CIF?

The CIF cannot itself accept donations since it is now a part of BAMC (a government agency can't accept donations).  However, you can help support the mission of the CIF by supporting non-profit agencies that play a vital role in support of the CIF:

• Operation Comfort provides general support and outings for the patients of the CFI
• Disabled Sports USA sponsors trips and sporting events for patients
• Wounded Warrior Project provides general support and partners with Disabled Sports USA
• Purple Heart provides general support of the CFI
• Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund built the CFI and plans to endow future equipment needs
• Warrior and Family Support Center operates activities in support of the soldiers and family members at BAMC (you'll need to look under "Soldier and Family Services", then click on "Warrior Family Support Center")
• Returning Heroes Home built the Warrior and Family Support Center
